PhD Position in Bioelectronic Platforms for Brain Tissue Interfacing and Neuromodulation

Join the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University, Sweden, as a PhD candidate in the development of next-generation bioelectronic platforms for studying implant interfaces and modulation of the brain tissue microenvironment. This research-driven position is based in the Organic Bioelectronics group, part of a highly collaborative environment with over 150 researchers and students. The project builds on established expertise in electrophoretic and iontronic drug delivery, as well as recent advances in in situ polymerization of neural electrodes, aiming to create novel implantable technologies for brain tissue interfacing. The research focus includes neuromodulation and localized drug delivery, with the central goal of establishing design rules for bioelectronic interfaces grounded in a mechanistic understanding of ionic and molecular transport at the implant-tissue interface. You will develop an experimental and computational platform using 3D-printed, brain-mimetic tissue models with tunable transport properties, enabling measurement and prediction of interface transport phenomena. The platform will be used to study the spread, uptake, and clearance of substances such as nutrients, drugs, neuromodulators, and electrode precursors over time and space. Your work will involve the design and fabrication of 3D-printed brain tissue models, development of experimental methods to investigate spatiotemporal transport phenomena, 3D cell cultures, cell-based evaluation of biological responses, and multiphysics modeling using COMSOL Multiphysics. The project is experimentally driven (approximately 70% wet lab, 30% modeling) and offers opportunities for teaching and departmental duties up to 20% of full-time. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, biophysics, applied physics, materials science, organic chemistry, or a related field, or equivalent knowledge. Strong problem-solving skills, multidisciplinary teamwork, and excellent communication abilities are essential. A background in cell biology, neurobiology, tissue models, or in vitro experimental systems is a strong asset. Experience in microfabrication, 3D printing, microscopy, cell culture, or finite element modeling (COMSOL Multiphysics) is advantageous. Personal qualities and suitability are highly valued. The PhD position is a full-time employment for four years, with possible extensions based on teaching and departmental duties. Benefits include paid vacation, full health-care coverage, paid parental leave, and accrued pension. Salary is determined by local negotiation. The starting date is by agreement. For more information about the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, doctoral studies, and employment benefits, visit the provided links. Applications must be submitted online by March 9, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. Linköping University values diversity and equal opportunities. For further details and to apply, see the official position page.
