PhD Positions in Humidification for Enhanced Waste Heat Recovery at University of Mons

The University of Mons (UMONS) in Belgium is offering two fully funded PhD positions focused on the exploration of humidification for enhanced waste heat recovery. The research is part of the MARCC (Moist Air energy Carrier for waste heat recovery) project, which aims to develop innovative pathways for introducing water into direct waste heat recovery applications from combustion flue gases. The ultimate goal is to reduce primary energy consumption and use water as an energy carrier, thereby contributing to significant reductions in CO2 emissions and advancing energy efficiency in industrial processes. PhD A will focus on process classification and waste heat recovery potential assessment, involving the analysis of heat-intensive industrial processes, development of a comprehensive process database, and the creation of a thermodynamics-based waste heat recovery assessment tool. This work will require strong skills in thermodynamics, exergy analysis, and programming (Aspen Plus, Python). PhD B will center on the development and optimisation of humidified heat recovery technology, particularly using indirect evaporative cooling. The candidate will work on advanced thermal modelling, component design, and system-level optimisation, with a focus on reducing exergy losses and improving heat exchanger design. The positions are supervised by Prof. Ward De Paepe, founder of the UMONS Micro Gas Turbine Research Centre and the Thermal Engineering and Combustion Research Unit. The research group is composed of 2 professors and 15 researchers, specializing in energy systems, heat transfer, and combustion. UMONS is located in the heart of Europe, offering a vibrant and international research environment. The positions are fully funded by the Wel Research Institute, with a net monthly salary of 2500€. The contract starts in April 2026 and runs until March 2030 (yearly-based). Candidates must have a Master's degree in Mechanical, Energy, or Chemical Engineering, be proficient in English, and have experience in programming, thermodynamic analysis, and process engineering. Application materials include a CV, letter of motivation, letter of recommendation, a one-page project idea analysis (indicating PhD A or B), and a 2-minute video. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2026. Applications should be sent to [email protected].
