PhD-student: Active Hysterons and Spiking Neurons for Physical Computing

This PhD position at AMOLF (Amsterdam) and TU/e (Eindhoven) offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of physics, materials science, and engineering, focusing on the development of bistable elements for in-materia computing. The project aims to design and realize the first networks that combine active and passive electronic neurons, leveraging organic electronics for chemical and electrical tunability. Drawing inspiration from nature’s adaptive multistable networks, the research seeks alternatives to conventional digital systems by integrating memory and computation in novel ways. The Van Hecke group has demonstrated the power of passive, bistable hysterons for sequential tasks, while the van de Burgt group has developed active electronic neurons that mimic spiking behavior. The project will bridge these two approaches, exploring how spiking neurons can be described as ‘active’ hysterons and how combining active and passive elements can enhance adaptability, memory, and sequencing in computational networks. Key research questions include the design and realization of mixed networks of artificial neurons, the extension of computational capabilities, and the control of spiking, bursting, and synchronization behaviors. The work will involve both computational modelling and experimental investigations, with applications demonstrated in simple robotic systems. The position is jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Martin van Hecke and Prof. Dr. Yoeri van de Burgt, and the successful candidate will split their time between Amsterdam and Eindhoven. AMOLF provides a dynamic, international research environment, with support for housing, visa applications, and relocation expenses for foreign students. The appointment is full-time for four years, with a starting salary of 2,968 Euros per month and a range of employment benefits. Candidates must hold an MSc degree in a relevant field and possess strong English communication skills. Experience with coding, numerical methods, and familiarity with complex systems or machine learning is advantageous. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis, and a motivation letter is required. AMOLF is committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds.
