About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in analytical chemistry within its Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences. This opportunity is part of a dynamic and innovative academic environment, supporting over 20,000 students and 6,000 staff from 100 countries. The successful candidate will join the research group of Prof. Frederik Lermyte, focusing on the development and application of advanced analytical methods, particularly mass spectrometry, to study biomolecular interactions, protein complexes, and ligand binding. The project aims to push the boundaries of analytical chemistry by investigating the stoichiometry, 3D structure, and ionisation processes of proteins and complexes, with applications to complex biological samples.

As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, collaborate with other research groups and universities, and disseminate your findings through conferences and journal publications. Additional responsibilities include supporting teaching, research, and service tasks within the Department of Chemistry. The position is based primarily at campus Groenenborger, with possible work at Campus Drie Eiken, offering a stimulating and inclusive working environment.

Eligibility requires an academic Master’s degree in Chemistry, bio-engineering, applied sciences (engineering), or civil engineering with a specialization in chemistry. Candidates who will obtain their degree by the time of appointment are also considered. Excellent academic results, fluency in English and Dutch, and alignment with the university’s educational and research vision are essential. Applicants should be motivated, committed to doctoral research, and willing to apply for external fellowships such as FWO 2026.

The scholarship is awarded for one year, with a monthly stipend calculated according to the university’s pay scales for contract research staff (Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP). The University of Antwerp is recognized for its HR excellence, sustainability, and commitment to diversity and equal opportunities. The application deadline is 5 January 2026. To apply, submit your application via the university’s online platform, including a motivation letter, academic CV, signed letter of acceptance from your UAntwerp promoter, and a statement of willingness to seek additional funding. For further information, contact [email protected] or Prof. Frederik Lermyte at [email protected].
