About this position

The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship in Environmental Sciences/Chemistry, focusing on soil, plants, animals, and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The position is based at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) and is part of the VIRTUE project, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project aims to develop a circular, nature-based method for removing PFAS from soil, water, and food systems, integrating phytoremediation, pyrolysis, and biochar application.

PFAS are persistent environmental pollutants found in soil, water, animals, and humans, posing significant health and ecological risks. The VIRTUE project addresses this challenge by combining innovative approaches: using plants to absorb PFAS, pyrolyzing contaminated biomass to destroy PFAS, and applying biochar to soil to immobilize residual contaminants. The research connects soil science, food safety, and public health, offering a scalable solution to a global pollution problem.

The successful candidate will focus on mapping PFAS in Norwegian soils, optimizing phytoremediation with local plants and grasses, refining pyrolysis conditions, and investigating biochar as a feed amendment in animal husbandry. There is flexibility to emphasize life-cycle analysis, human exposure, or cost-benefit modeling. The project involves collaboration with NIBIO, NGI, and 19 industrial and municipal partners, with fieldwork in Norway and laboratory/greenhouse experiments at NMBU, NIBIO, and Mære agricultural college.

Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree (soil science, environmental science/chemistry, ecology, or agronomy) with a strong academic record in statistics and data analysis. Required qualifications include a five-year degree with 120 ECTS credits at master's level, a thesis of at least 20 ECTS credits, an average grade of B or above, and proficiency in English. Advantageous skills include knowledge of biogeochemical processes, organic contamination, field and laboratory experience, PFAS/biochar expertise, and Scandinavian language skills. Candidates should be solution-oriented, independent, analytical, collaborative, and interested in fieldwork.

The position offers a salary of NOK 550,800 per year, with employment following national guidelines for PhD scholars. Admission to a PhD program at NMBU is required.
