About this position

The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is offering a fully funded three-year PhD scholarship in Plant/Soil Sciences, focusing on the uptake dynamics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in vegetables. This position is based in the Department of Plant Science, Faculty of BioSciences, and is linked to the NFR-financed project “PFAS in Agriculture: Risks and Mitigation (PFARM)” led by NIVA (2026-2029). The project aims to assess the risks of PFAS contamination in Norwegian agriculture, with the PhD student’s research forming a key part of the risk assessment process.

PFAS, known as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence and bioaccumulation, are a growing concern for food safety worldwide. This PhD project will investigate PFAS behavior in Northern environmental conditions and in vegetable species relevant to Northern food production. The main objectives are to characterize PFAS uptake patterns in selected vegetable crops and to identify the key factors influencing these patterns, such as climate, soil properties, and plant species or organ specificity. Research will include targeted PFAS analyses using high-resolution LC/QTOF mass spectrometry at the NIVA laboratory, as well as studies of plant physiological responses to PFAS exposure, including growth, photosynthesis, and protective mechanisms.

Main tasks include conducting controlled-environment experiments with various vegetable species under different climate and soil conditions, performing growth analysis and gas-exchange measurements, analyzing plant samples for PFAS, and carrying out metabolite profiling to understand plant responses. The successful candidate will develop a plan for PhD progress within the first months of appointment, aiming to complete the doctorate within the scholarship period.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in plant physiology, plant science, plant biology, general biology, soil and water science, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong academic background and proficiency in English. Experience in plant research, soil science, chemical or biochemical analysis, and scientific writing is required. Additional skills in controlled environment plant research, computational methods (especially R), and public communication are valued. Candidates completing their degree in spring/summer 2026 may apply, provided documentation is submitted before employment.

The position offers a starting annual salary of NOK 550,800, following national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.
