About this position
The Department of Mathematics: Analysis, Logic and Discrete Mathematics (WE16) at Ghent University is offering a fully funded PhD position in mathematical logic and analytic combinatorics. The research focus is on phase transitions and logical limit laws, approached via analytical combinatorics. This opportunity is funded through a Senior Research Project of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) and supervised by Prof. Dr. Andreas Weiermann.
Ghent University is a leading institution with more than 15,000 staff members and 11 faculties, providing high-quality, research-based programs across a wide range of academic disciplines. The Department of Mathematics is renowned for its stimulating and internationally visible research environment, offering access to advanced training, education opportunities, and a vibrant academic community.
The doctoral fellowship is a full-time position, initially for 12 months and extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation. The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is free of personal income tax. Additional benefits include 36 days of holiday leave, annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, eco vouchers, and travel funding for international conferences, workshops, and research stays.
Applicants should hold or soon obtain a Master’s degree in mathematics or a related field. A strong background or interest in analytic combinatorics, proof theory, ordinal analysis, or combinatorial probability is essential. Candidates should be comfortable with asymptotic or combinatorial methods or motivated to acquire them, and demonstrate strong abstract reasoning skills. English is the working language; no prior knowledge of Dutch or French is required, though willingness to acquire basic Dutch is welcomed.
Applications are accepted until April 1, 2026. To apply, send your application to Prof. Dr. Andreas Weiermann at [email protected]. For informal inquiries, you may also contact him via email. For more information and to apply online, visit the provided application link.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to engage in advanced mathematical research, collaborate internationally, and develop expertise in logic, combinatorics, and analysis within a supportive academic environment at Ghent University.
