The Institute for Advanced Studies Vienna (IHS) is a renowned non-university research institute dedicated to generating empirically based knowledge on key economic and social challenges. The Research Group Educational Structures and Educational Opportunities at IHS is seeking a Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d, 35h/week) to join their team, focusing on economics of education research. This position offers the opportunity to develop a dissertation project within the broad areas of educational pathways, returns to education and skills, and the design of efficient, inclusive education systems.

As a doctoral researcher, you will conduct empirical research in educational economics, applying advanced econometric methods and potentially AI-based approaches. You will work with administrative and survey data, collaborate on externally funded projects—such as those examining the long-term impact of regional educational opportunities on career development—and participate in a structured PhD program at the University of Vienna. The role includes publishing in peer-reviewed journals and engaging with both the academic community and policy decision makers.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in economics or a related field, with advanced expertise in applied econometrics and microeconomics. Experience in educational economics is highly advantageous. Proficiency in R, Python, or Stata is required, ideally demonstrated through an empirical thesis. Strong teamwork and networking skills are essential, along with excellent written and spoken English; German language skills are a plus.
