About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Hydrogen Embrittlement of Metallic Materials, located at the Division of Materials and Manufacture within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This research opportunity is part of the TechForH2 competence center and focuses on understanding and mitigating hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines. The project aims to investigate degradation and damage mechanisms affecting the reliability and durability of engine materials, contributing to the advancement of sustainable vehicle propulsion systems.

As a doctoral student, you will join a dynamic, international team dedicated to innovative materials research, advanced manufacturing, and real-world impact. The division maintains strong industry ties and offers a collaborative environment with opportunities for academic and industrial partnerships. Your work will involve experimental research, advanced coursework within the Graduate School of Materials Science, and communication of scientific results both verbally and in writing. The position also includes teaching or other departmental duties up to 10% of working hours.

Applicants must possess a Master’s degree (minimum 120 credits) in materials science, mechanical engineering, material mechanics, physics, or production engineering from an internationally recognized university. Strong English communication skills are essential. Desirable qualifications include experience with metallic materials, materials processing, and characterization, as well as analytical skills and research potential. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented at the start of studies.

The position is fully funded from the start, with a fixed-term appointment of 2.5 years until the Licentiate degree and the possibility of extension. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and you will enjoy full employee benefits. Chalmers offers a supportive work environment, Swedish language courses, and is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion through initiatives like the GENIE project.
