About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral position in Production Engineering, focusing on advanced machining and functional surfaces. This research area is pivotal for modern component manufacturing, emphasizing high precision, controlled surface properties, energy efficiency, and short cycle times. The project aims to deepen the understanding of the interactions between machine tools, cutting tools, materials, and process parameters. By integrating experimental metrology, high-resolution sensor data, process modelling, simulation, and data-driven methods, the research seeks to achieve significant process optimisation.
The doctoral research will cover advanced machining processes such as gear machining, turning, milling, and grinding. Integrated metrology will be used to characterize dimensions, form, and surface properties, with a particular focus on functional surfaces. The work also involves modelling machine tools and machining dynamics, as well as conducting advanced experiments on process stability, tool wear, and material removal mechanisms. Real-time measurement methods will be applied to complex operations such as skiving.
The successful candidate will join the Manufacturing and Metrology Systems unit and the Precision Engineering and Metrology (PEM) group at the Department of Production Engineering. The group consists of around 15 researchers and doctoral students and collaborates closely with industry through Centre X – Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Next-Generation Powertrains at KTH. The project offers excellent opportunities for experimental work in advanced laboratory environments and close collaboration with international research partners and industry.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Andreas Archenti. The position is full-time and based in Stockholm, Sweden. The employment is for up to four years, with a monthly salary according to KTH’s Doctoral student salary agreement and access to employee benefits. The position is open to applicants with a strong background in mechanical engineering, machine design, or related fields, and an interest in both experimental and theoretical work. Experience in control systems, metrology, or machine tools is considered beneficial.
Applicants must have a second cycle degree (such as a master's degree) or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 at the second-cycle level, or possess equivalent knowledge. Proficiency in English equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. Selection will be based on academic qualifications, relevant experience, and personal skills such as goal orientation, independence, collaboration, and analytical ability.
Applications must be submitted through KTH's recruitment system by April 30, 2026. Required documents include certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of language requirements, CV, application letter, and representative publications or technical reports. For further information, contact Professor Andreas Archenti at [email protected].
