About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Solid and Structural Dynamics, focusing on the integration and reliability of sensor data in railway signalling systems. The research will be conducted within the National Centre of Excellence CHARMEC, at the Division of Dynamics, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The project aims to advance the use of operational and safety-related sensor data for next-generation railway signalling, enabling proactive maintenance, improved reliability, and cost reduction. You will investigate which sensor and inspection data are most relevant for various stakeholders in the railway system, assess their reliability, and explore methods to enhance data quality. The research will also address how AI can be safely integrated into signalling systems, considering the challenges of safety-critical environments.
As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Solid and Structural Mechanics, develop scientific concepts, and communicate your research findings. The position includes teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours, and offers opportunities for interaction with the railway sector and participation in European projects. The contract is a fixed-term appointment of four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and you will enjoy full employee benefits, including access to Swedish courses, generous parental leave, subsidized day care, and healthcare.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits) in Applied Mechanics, Structural Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar. For applicants educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English skills and collaborative abilities are mandatory. Experience in numerical simulations, statistical analyses, and mechanical or railway engineering is advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
Chalmers is committed to gender balance and equality, with initiatives such as the GENIE project. The university offers a dynamic and inspiring environment in Gothenburg, with a strong focus on scientific excellence and sustainability.
