Doctoral student in the history of polar governance in the national polar research school KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden

This doctoral position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to research the history and geopolitics of governance in the polar regions, with a particular focus on Antarctica, non-Western perspectives, bi-polar commonalities, and languages other than English. The project is situated within the third-cycle subject of History of Science, Technology and Environment, and welcomes proposals from any theoretical tradition that fit into the fields of environmental, technological, or scientific history. Both marine and terrestrial perspectives are encouraged, as well as studies on the role of non-state actors in polar governance.

The position is part of the National Research School of Excellence in Arctic and Antarctic Learning (SEAL), which provides a world-class interdisciplinary training environment spanning natural sciences, technology, law, and humanities. SEAL emphasizes stakeholder engagement and science diplomacy, and offers opportunities for field courses with natural science PhD students from Sweden and abroad. Interdisciplinary learning and interaction are key components of the program.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Kati Lindström, with final decisions made upon admission. The successful candidate will be employed full-time for up to four years, with a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement and access to employee benefits. Admission requirements include a second cycle degree (such as a master's), or at least 240 higher education credits (including 60 second-cycle credits), or equivalent knowledge. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to independently write longer scientific texts and have English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Selection criteria include goal orientation, perseverance, independence, collaboration skills, professional approach, analytical ability, fluency in a relevant language other than English, and openness to interdisciplinarity. Certified copies of diplomas, grades, and language certificates are required, with translations if not in English or Swedish.
