About this position

The KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student (licentiate) position in the field of Transport Science, focusing on the project 'From Behaviour to Emissions: Modeling Modal Shift.' This research aims to advance sustainable mobility by integrating behavioural theory, deep learning, explainable AI (xAI), and resilience analysis to understand how infrastructural interventions impact modal shift and transport emissions. The project is part of a large European initiative prioritizing public transport and developing mobility and service hubs across several municipalities to promote intermodal transport usage.

Main research activities include methodological concept development, literature review, data collection and analysis, model validation, and stress testing. The candidate will collaborate with other doctoral students in the research group, building on existing accessibility indices, agent-based simulation, and travel demand forecasting models. Empirical evidence generated will be published in scientific journals and shared with stakeholders beyond academia.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Fariya Sharmeen. The position targets a licentiate degree and is structured as full-time employment for up to two years, with renewal options. The workplace offers attractive employee benefits and a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. The research environment is creative, dynamic, and international, with a strong emphasis on equality, diversity, and equal opportunities.

Eligibility requires a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, with mandatory English proficiency (English B/6). Applicants should have a relevant background in applied mathematics, transport science, computer science, machine learning, or AI, and possess documented programming skills, experience in survey design, big data handling, and behavioural econometrics. Highly desirable qualifications include experience in developing behavioural models, integrated modeling, critical thinking, and strong communication skills in English. Personal attributes such as goal orientation, perseverance, independence, collaboration, and professionalism are highly valued.

Applications must be submitted via KTH’s recruitment system by March 12, 2026. Required documents include a CV, application letter, certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of language requirements, and representative publications or technical reports. Documents not in English or Swedish must be translated and certified. Security clearance may be required for some positions. For further information, contact Dr. Fariya Sharmeen at [email protected].

Join KTH Royal Institute of Technology and contribute to shaping the future of sustainable transport through innovative research and collaboration in a leading technical university.
