Evaluating Inclusivity in Clinical Trials: Measurement, Guidance, and Tool Development for the Clinical Trial Community University of Aberdeen in United Kingdom

This PhD position at the University of Aberdeen is part of the EDICT (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Trials) Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN). The network comprises seven leading European institutions and industry partners, aiming to transform the design, conduct, and reporting of clinical trials by advancing inclusivity. As one of 16 Doctoral Candidates, you will contribute to four interconnected work packages: Measurement, Methodologies, Implementation, and Systemic Change.

The project focuses on evaluating inclusivity in clinical trials, specifically developing guidance and practical tools for the clinical trial community. You will conduct a systematic review of efforts to define inclusivity, including peer-reviewed papers, policy documents, and consensus statements. Qualitative research with stakeholders—trialists, patient partners, regulators, industry representatives, and under-represented communities—will explore perceptions and requirements for inclusive trials. Participatory workshops will further refine measurement criteria and operationalize inclusivity in trial design and reporting. The final phase involves creating and user-testing tools and guidance to support trialists in making evidence-based decisions about inclusivity.

Secondments are planned at ECRIN (France) and the Dutch Cardiovascular Research Network (The Netherlands), providing exposure to international clinical trial infrastructures and regulatory perspectives, as well as specialized experience in cardiovascular research reporting. Key outputs include scientific articles, conference presentations, and practical resources for trialists.

Training relevance is high, with opportunities to develop mixed-methods expertise, systematic review skills, consensus-building approaches, and tool development. The project directly contributes to improving inclusivity in clinical trials, supporting accessible, evidence-based resources for trial design and conduct.

Funding is provided through the MSCA-DN programme, offering a full-time employment contract, a competitive salary (£43,639 per annum), a monthly mobility allowance (£454.40), and a family allowance (€660 per month gross) where eligible. Additional MSCA allowances may apply. Candidates must demonstrate their right to work in the UK and may be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.

Applicants should have a strong undergraduate degree (minimum 2.1 honours or international equivalent) in health sciences, psychology, public health, implementation science, or a related field, with a strong academic record. Postgraduate study or research experience is advantageous. MSCA-DN eligibility requirements, including the mobility rule, apply. Willingness to undertake international mobility and secondments is essential.
