About this position

The Applied Superconductivity Lab at the University of Bristol, part of the Electrical Energy Management Group (EEMG), is seeking highly motivated PhD candidates for research in high temperature superconducting (HTS) electrical machines, cables, and magnet technology. The lab is engaged in cutting-edge research on HTS REBCO coated conductors, electromagnetic modelling and simulation (using FEA tools like COMSOL), and experimental prototyping of electrical machines. The University of Bristol offers a fully funded PhD scholarship for 3.5 to 4.0 years, covering tuition and providing a stipend.

Candidates should have a background in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, with experience in HTS conductors, electromagnetic modelling, and prototyping being advantageous. Training opportunities are available for candidates who need to develop some of these skills. The application process involves submitting a CV, academic transcripts, and a cover letter to Dr Jun Ma. The main deadline for the UoB-CSC joint scholarship is 1st December 2025, with additional opportunities through the Bristol Postgraduate Research Scholarships.

The EEMG is a leading research group in low carbon electrical systems, power electronics, and advanced electrical machines, offering a vibrant environment for doctoral research.

Experience with high temperature superconducting (HTS) REBCO coated conductors, either in simulation or experiment, is desirable. Skills in electromagnetic modelling and simulation using FEA tools (such as COMSOL) and experience in electrical machines modelling and experimental prototyping are preferred. Training will be provided for candidates lacking some of these skills. Applicants should submit a CV, academic transcripts, and a cover letter detailing relevant experience.

How to apply

Send an email to Dr Jun Ma ([email protected]) with your CV, undergraduate and/or master's transcripts, and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience.
