About this position
King's College London is offering a fully-funded PhD position starting October 2026 in the field of robust and fair artificial intelligence for early detection of treatment resistance in schizophrenia. This research aims to develop and evaluate AI methods, including large language models (LLMs), transformer-based models, and fairness-aware approaches, to identify treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) early and ensure equitable access to clozapine. The project will leverage electronic health records (EHRs), multimodal data, and synthetic data generation to forecast TRS onset, extract treatment patterns, and mitigate biases affecting ethnic minorities, women, and younger patients. The work addresses critical challenges in mental health care, aiming to reduce ineffective polypharmacy, hospitalizations, and long-term disability, while promoting fairness in psychosis treatment.
Applicants should have a strong academic background in biosciences, computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, chemistry, or physics, and be enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research in healthcare. The position is open to both Home and International students. English language proficiency (IELTS overall 6.5, minimum 6 in each component) is required. International students must apply for a Student Visa and may need an ATAS certificate; visa and Immigration Health Surcharge fees are not covered by the studentship.
