About this position

This fully funded 4-year PhD studentship focuses on innovative immunotherapy research, specifically mRNA-based in vivo CAR-T cell generation, as a next-generation approach to cancer treatment. Hosted by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in collaboration with University College London (UCL), the project aims to improve the efficacy of CAR-T therapies while addressing toxicity and manufacturing challenges associated with current methods.

As a PhD student, you will gain hands-on experience in mRNA lipid nanoparticle (LNP) production and functionalisation, targeted delivery using antibody-guided systems, and a range of in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo assays for therapeutic and toxicological evaluation. The program also includes immune cell engineering and advanced bioassays, providing a comprehensive training environment that spans immunology, molecular biology, and regulatory science.

Supervision will be provided by experts from both MHRA and UCL, offering access to world-class facilities, cross-disciplinary training, and rotations within the Agency. The studentship is open to UK/home-status applicants and includes a full stipend and pension benefits. The start date is October 2026.

Key research areas include immunotherapy, mRNA technology, CAR-T cell engineering, cancer research, and translational science. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a strong background in immunology, molecular biology, or related fields, and an interest in cutting-edge therapeutic development.

For more information and application details, refer to the LinkedIn post or contact the supervisors at MHRA and UCL.
