The Department of Environmental Sciences at Tennessee State University is offering two graduate research assistantships (MS/PhD) focused on forest ecology and plant–soil feedbacks (PSFs). The positions are under the supervision of Dr. Sarah McCarthy-Neumann, whose research group investigates the role of PSF in forest community dynamics, particularly in oak–hickory forests on the Cumberland Plateau. Research projects will explore the persistence of PSF legacies after tree mortality or harvesting and the influence of fire on PSF dynamics. The work involves both field and greenhouse experiments, leveraging sites with large-scale thinning and prescribed fire treatments.

Students will have the opportunity to develop independent research questions and are encouraged to publish their results. The McCarthy-Neumann Lab is part of the Department of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences, and the research aligns with key topics in forest ecology, environmental science, and plant biology. The assistantships are open to both master's and PhD applicants with relevant backgrounds in biology, ecology, or environmental science.
