About this position

Dr. AMM Nazmul Ahsan, Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, is recruiting a motivated graduate student (PhD preferred, Master's also considered) for a fully funded research assistantship in Materials Science and Additive Manufacturing. The position is available in the Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering, with a start date as early as Summer/Fall 2026.

The selected student will join a funded research project focused on developing novel alloys for energy applications in harsh environments using additive manufacturing. The research integrates computational modeling, machine learning, and experimental investigations to design and characterize new alloys and composites fabricated via laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. The work is closely related to materials science, additive manufacturing, and machine learning, with applications in energy and extreme environments.

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering. A master's degree in one of these fields is required for PhD applicants. Experience with metal additive manufacturing, materials characterization, and/or physics-informed machine learning is required. Proficiency in Python programming is preferred. Candidates already based in the U.S. are preferred.

The position offers a monthly stipend and full tuition support. Interested candidates should send their CV, a brief statement on how they meet the qualifications, and unofficial transcripts to Dr. AMM Nazmul Ahsan at [email protected]. The position is expected to be filled immediately.
