Two 3.5-year fully-funded PhD studentships are available, covering tuition fees (domestic or international, with funds for up to one international student), a tax-free bursary for living costs at UKRI rates (£20,780 and rising), a generous research budget for at least six months of field research, conference travel, and participation in project workshops and dissemination events. The postdoc position offers a salary of £38,784 to £46,049 per annum (pro rata if part time), fixed-term for 9 months

Requirements
Applicants must be able to begin full-time postgraduate research on a PhD programme starting in September 2026 and reside within the UK for the duration of their studies. Candidates must have an outstanding academic record evidenced by a master's degree (completed or near completion) and an undergraduate degree in politics, philosophy, African studies, or another relevant social science or humanities discipline, ideally at distinction/first level. Applicants should demonstrate insight into the ideas of anti-autocratic movements in Africa, submit an original and well-written research proposal aligned with the project, and have expertise in African politics or a relevant region. Proficiency in an African language other than English to at least B2 level is required, with French and Portuguese particularly advantageous. Desirable criteria include methodological expertise in political ideology or discourse analysis, expertise in political philosophy/theory, experience in independent field research in Africa, knowledge of autocratic regimes and democratic struggle, engagement with democracy movements or related stakeholders, and experience in public communication.
