Description

PhD Fellowship in Applied Information Technology: AI Creative Solutions in Health is offered by Kristiania University of Applied Sciences, Norway’s largest independent comprehensive university college. The position is based at the School of Arts, Design and Media in Oslo, a leading environment for creative and art-related disciplines, and is part of the MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity, a national research centre funded by the Research Council of Norway (2025–2030). This fully funded PhD fellowship focuses on advancing research at the intersection of creative artificial intelligence, artistic innovation, and health technologies for human well-being. The successful candidate will join a cross-disciplinary team, collaborating with experts from both the School of Arts, Design and Media and the School of Economics, Innovation, and Technology, as well as national and international partners in the MishMash network. The PhD project will investigate how AI and creative technologies can be combined to design and build support solutions in human health, empathy, and well-being. Potential research areas include interactive AI systems, evolutionary approaches, creative media tools, immersive environments, and adaptive sound or image systems. Central research questions address how AI can enhance emotional connection, facilitate inclusive participation, and support care-oriented human–machine interaction while avoiding bias and automation of empathy. The project aims to provide new insights relevant to therapeutic, educational, or assistive contexts, and may involve developing or testing creative AI prototypes in collaboration with health institutions, using methods from human–computer interaction, affective computing, or creative technology design. Ethical and accessibility considerations are central, ensuring that AI systems promote trust, inclusion, and respect for human agency. The candidate will have the opportunity to design and evaluate creative AI-based interactive systems for well-being, accessibility, or emotional communication; develop generative AI-based solutions for creative health interventions; analyze human–AI interaction patterns; and implement ethical and inclusive design methods for responsible AI in health and creative practices. Dissemination of findings through interdisciplinary conferences and journals, and collaboration with research and health-sector partners, are expected. Requirements: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS or equivalent) in a relevant subject area with a grade B or better, and a relevant 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree. Required skills include analytical and technical expertise in applied information technology, particularly in AI, machine learning, or human–computer interaction; experience with programming and digital tools (e.g., Python, Unity, Unreal, Max/MSP); and creative or artistic competence (digital art, game design, creative coding, or interactive media production). Understanding of user-centred or participatory design methods, proficiency in English, and motivation for interdisciplinary collaboration are essential. Familiarity with ethical, cultural, or societal perspectives on AI, and knowledge of evaluation methods for user experience, are desirable. Personal qualities such as curiosity, independence, communication skills, and goal orientation are valued. Funding and Benefits: The fellowship is fully funded, offering a high salary (NOK 550,800 per year), NOK 50,000 per year for travel and running costs, free health and travel insurance, pension plan, equipment, and strong labour protections including paid parental and sick leave and 25 paid vacation days. Application Process: Applications must be submitted via the Kristiania University of Applied Sciences application portal. Required documents include a motivation letter, diplomas and transcripts, CV, at least two references, master’s thesis, and a project proposal (up to 4 pages). Admission to the PhD programme is required within three months of the start date. The application deadline is 2 February 2026. For more information, visit Kristiania University of Applied Sciences or PhD in Applied Information Technology . For project-related questions, contact Professor Synne Tollerud Bull (SynneTollerud.Bull@kristiania.no); for programme questions, contact Professor Asle Fagerstrøm (asle.fagerstrom@kristiania.no).
