This PhD project at the University of Huddersfield, funded by the BBSRC Yorkshire Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership (YBDTP), focuses on the sustainable valorisation of Persea americana (avocado) waste, specifically peels, to generate high-value bioactive compounds for use in anti-inflammatory skin care and wound healing products. The global increase in avocado consumption has led to significant organic waste, presenting both environmental challenges and opportunities for innovative healthcare solutions.

Leveraging the expertise of Prof Olumayokun Olajide in pharmacological evaluation, Prof Chenyu Du in biorefinery, and Dr Benjamin Lichman in natural product biosynthesis, the project will employ enzyme-assisted extraction techniques to isolate natural products from freeze-dried avocado peels. These extracts will be rigorously evaluated for pharmacological activity using advanced in vitro models, including full-thickness 3D skin models to assess anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. Chemical analyses will be performed using HPLC, LC/MS, and GC/MS to characterise the bioactive compounds.

The successful candidate will develop interdisciplinary skills in cellular and molecular pharmacology, biorefinery, and sustainability science, contributing to the advancement of green circular economy principles and innovation in waste valorisation. The research environment is highly collaborative, with opportunities for training and career development in both academic and industrial settings.

Applicants should have a strong background in pharmacy, pharmacology, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, or chemical engineering. The programme welcomes candidates from any biological, chemical, or physical science, as well as mathematics, who are interested in applying their skills to biological questions. International students are eligible to apply, but must meet the host university's entry and English language requirements. Funding includes a tax-free annual stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26 entry), research costs, and tuition fees at the UK rate. A limited number of full studentships are available for exceptional international candidates. The studentship is fully funded for four years, with the expectation that the PhD will be completed within this period. International students should note that visa, NHS surcharge, travel insurance, and travel costs are not covered by UKRI funding.
