Description

This PhD position at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) offers an exciting opportunity to join the MACSYS node, part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Mathematical Analysis of Cellular Systems. The successful candidate will work within the School of Mathematical Sciences, collaborating with a vibrant group of PhD students and research fellows on cutting-edge projects in mathematical biology. The research focuses on developing and deploying mathematical and computational models to interpret experimental data generated within the MACSYS ecosystem. Key biological applications include creating tools to analyze multi-omic data that serve as fingerprints of cellular responses to external stresses, modeling cyanobacterial CO2 concentrating mechanisms using reaction-diffusion frameworks, predicting outcomes of microbial competition in industrial fermentation, and designing mathematical models to optimize protein switch technology. Applicants should have a strong background in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, or physics, with well-developed programming skills in Julia, Python, or C++. Experience in implementing numerical methods for solving partial differential equations is essential. The position is supported by a tax-free scholarship of approximately AU$35,000 per annum for up to three years, covering living costs for full-time students. Candidates must be eligible to enroll in the PhD program at QUT. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of two referees via email to Professor Matthew Simpson. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary research at the interface of mathematics and biology, within a collaborative and supportive research environment.
