PhD in Mechanical Behavior and Assessment of Asphalt Layer Interfaces at Université Laval Université Laval in Canada

The Department of Civil and Water Engineering at Université Laval is seeking a motivated PhD student to join the INTERFACE project, focusing on the mechanical behavior and assessment of asphalt layer interfaces. The research integrates laboratory experiments, sensing technologies, numerical modeling, and machine learning to investigate interlayer bonding in asphalt pavements. The project aims to characterize the mechanical behavior of asphalt interfaces under various environmental and loading conditions, identify mechanisms leading to debonding or slip, develop constitutive interface models, and establish non-destructive diagnostic indicators for pavement analysis.

Ideal candidates will have a BSc and MSc in civil, pavement, materials engineering, or a related field, with a strong academic record and research potential. Proficiency in English or French is required. Experience with laboratory testing, sensors, signal processing, or data analysis is an asset, and interest in machine learning or numerical modeling is a plus. The position offers project funding with a stipend for admitted students, access to specialized laboratory facilities, and research training in advanced experimental and computational methods.
