About this position

This PhD project at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology focuses on developing advanced mathematical models to assess and improve vector control strategies for Aedes-borne arboviruses, particularly dengue and chikungunya, which are emerging public health threats in Europe due to the spread of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, climate change, and increased human mobility. The project aims to create and validate stage-structured delayed differential equation models using extensive datasets from French and Italian outbreak regions, with data provided by industrial partner Altopictus and public health agencies such as Santé Publique France. These models will be used to predict current and future disease risks, evaluate the efficacy of various vector control methods, and inform public health responses in near real-time.

The research will involve training in mathematical modelling, scientific computing, statistical model fitting, and mosquito biology, with opportunities for fieldwork in Southern France and engagement with international public health organizations. The successful candidate will join the Iapetus DTP, participate in transferable skills training, and may undertake work placements with external organizations.

Applicants should have a strong quantitative background and demonstrated experience in modelling and simulation. Funding is available for UK and eligible international students, with a competitive selection process for international applicants.
