Description

This PhD position in Regenerative Orthopedics at Utrecht University offers two highly motivated candidates the opportunity to join the Ombion project, a major initiative funded by the National Growth Funds to accelerate the transition to animal-free biomedical innovations. The project, formally known as the Centre for Animal-Free Biomedical Translation, collaborates with numerous national and international partners to develop and disseminate expertise in animal-free biomedical research, focusing on four key areas: ALS, cystic fibrosis, asthma & COPD, and osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis. As a PhD candidate, you will concentrate on developing advanced in vitro and ex vivo culture models for osteoarthritis research, aiming to reduce and replace animal experiments while contributing to the development of new and improved drugs for osteoarthritis patients. The research builds on established methods and leverages the expertise of collaborating researchers and companies within the Ombion consortium. You will join the Regenerative Orthopedics research group led by Prof. Marianna Tryfonidou, a dynamic, international, and multidisciplinary team focused on translational research for joint diseases and low back pain. The group is part of the Regenerative Medicine Utrecht collaboration and is housed at the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht within the Hubrecht Institute. You will work closely with other research groups, including those led by Prof. Jeffrey Beekman (UMCU) and Prof. Tim Welting (Maastricht UMC+), and co-supervise Bachelor's and Master's students in practical and thesis assignments. The position offers a collaborative environment with opportunities for personal development, professional training, and engagement in both academic and industry partnerships. Applicants should have a Master's degree in Life Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, or Medicine, with laboratory experience in biomolecular and biochemical analysis, cell/tissue culture, and willingness to work with various cadaveric tissues. Strong communication skills, initiative, and proficiency in English are essential. The offer includes a one-year contract with extension to four years upon successful assessment, a competitive salary, holiday and year-end bonuses, pension scheme, and flexible employment terms. The preferred starting date is January 2026. Utrecht University is committed to diversity and inclusion, providing a supportive environment for all staff. Applications should be submitted online with a CV and motivation letter by 14 November 2025.
