This fully funded PhD opportunity at Durham University focuses on the occupancy, density, and ecology of terrestrial British mammals, addressing urgent challenges in wildlife conservation and biodiversity monitoring. The project is part of the Iapetus Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) and is supervised by Prof. Russell Hill, Dr. Chris Sutherland, and Prof. Philip Stephens. The research leverages large-scale citizen science data from MammalWeb, advanced camera trap surveys, and state-of-the-art statistical modelling to understand the abundance, distribution, and activity of a wide range of British mammal species.

Key research areas include identifying drivers of mammal occupancy and activity, developing and validating methods for density estimation, and improving the use of citizen-led data for conservation policy. The project offers hands-on experience in field surveys, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement, with training in cutting-edge ecological and statistical techniques. Collaboration with the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (CASE partner) provides additional opportunities for applied research and professional development.

Applicants will gain skills in camera trap deployment, survey design, ecological data analysis, and scientific communication.
