About this position

This PhD position at Utrecht University investigates the redistribution of economic resources in postdivorce families, with a particular focus on resource pooling and financial transfers to children. The project aims to understand how family diversity and gender influence economic resilience and whether these factors contribute to new forms of socioeconomic inequality. The research will utilize panel data from 'New Families in the Netherlands', administrative data, and newly collected qualitative data to provide comprehensive insights into the economic outcomes for women and children following divorce.

As a PhD candidate, you will be based in the Department of Sociology, working within a collaborative and supportive team. Your responsibilities include conducting literature reviews, analyzing complex data sets, collecting qualitative data, presenting findings at conferences, and participating in departmental activities. You will also gain teaching experience, limited to a maximum of 10% of your time, and receive PhD training through the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) Graduate School.

The supervisory team consists of Professor Anne-Rigt Poortman and Dr. Anne Brons, who will provide close guidance and support throughout your research. Applicants should have (almost) completed a Master’s degree in Sociology, Interdisciplinary Social Science, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong interest in family studies and economic inequality. Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as advanced statistical analysis, is highly valued. Candidates should possess excellent research, writing, and presentation skills in English (Dutch is a plus), practical abilities for data collection, and strong social and creative skills.

The position offers a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension to a total of four years upon successful assessment. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 for full-time employment, supplemented by 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
