About this position

KU Leuven, ranked among the world’s top 50 universities and recognized as Europe’s most innovative university, offers a PhD position in the Department of Materials Engineering at the Bruges campus. The campus is home to the Propolis research group, focusing on polymer processing, and the interfacial engineering research (iR) group, which is a multidisciplinary team working at the forefront of materials interfaces, including stimuli-responsive materials, energy storage, and carbon capture technologies. The iR group collaborates closely with other research groups in civil, materials, and chemical engineering, providing a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment.

This PhD position is part of the FWO-funded ECOSPHERE project, which aims to develop novel sustainable building materials by directly converting CO2 into functional carbonates. These carbonates serve as carbon-negative, high-performance fillers in coatings and plasters, potentially replacing TiO2, a resource-intensive component of white paint. The research will focus on understanding the process-structure and structure-property relationships in the synthesis of these functional carbonates and their application in white interior coatings. The project integrates materials chemistry, colloidal and interface science, rheology, and coating technology, and includes collaboration with industrial partners.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of researchers and benefit from structured PhD mentoring. The position offers a full-time one-year contract, extendable up to four years upon positive evaluation, with access to state-of-the-art facilities at the Bruges campus. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to high-impact sustainable technologies with real industrial relevance.

Applicants should hold or obtain before starting a European Master’s degree in Engineering Technology, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Nanoscience, Sustainable Materials, or a closely related field, ranking within the top 10% of their class. A strong interest in materials synthesis and characterization, colloid science, microscopy, coating formulations, and/or building materials is essential. Excellent English communication skills, motivation to work across disciplines, willingness to present research, contribute to teaching, and write a PhD fellowship proposal are expected. Experience with SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, rheology, polymer or mineral particle synthesis, and coating formulation is advantageous. Prior research or industry experience and peer-reviewed publications are a plus. Communication skills in Dutch are a major advantage.
