About this position
The Advanced Nanomaterials and Devices (AND) group at Eindhoven University of Technology is offering a PhD position focused on the development and study of mid-infrared photodetectors based on hexagonal SiGe (hex-SiGe), a pioneering direct bandgap semiconductor fully compatible with silicon technology. This research aims to advance ultrafast infrared photodetectors and ultrasensitive phototransistors, with the ultimate goal of achieving single photon detectivity using the phototransistor principle.
As a doctoral researcher, you will investigate the absorption of infrared light in hex-SiGe and apply this knowledge to group IV infrared photodetectors. The project is highly multidisciplinary, embedded within the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, and is part of the Casimir Institute and the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology. Research activities will also be conducted at the Nanolab cleanroom, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities.
The position offers full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. You will spend a minimum of 10% of your time on teaching tasks, with a maximum of 15% per year. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, including a monthly salary (scale P: €3,059–€3,881), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, and allowances for commuting, home working, and internet costs. International candidates benefit from a Staff Immigration Team and a 30% tax compensation scheme.
Applicants must have an MSc in (applied) physics or a similar degree. Preferred qualifications include experience with 2D materials, ultrafast optical techniques, terahertz spectroscopy, or nanofabrication. Excellent English proficiency (C1 level), strong communication skills, independence, and responsibility are required. The university provides high-quality training programs, technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, and sports facilities.
Eindhoven University of Technology is a leading international institution located in the Brainport region, renowned for its collaborative approach with high-tech industries and its vibrant academic community. The Department of Electrical Engineering is dedicated to advancing knowledge in the field through education, research, and valorization, with a focus on smart sustainable society, connected world, and healthy humanity.
