About this position

The Emmy Noether Junior Research Group "Smoothings from log resolutions and applications" at Leibniz University Hannover is offering a fully funded PhD position in Algebraic Geometry. The successful candidate will join a small, supportive research group focused on cutting-edge topics in algebraic geometry, with strong connections to the Institute for Algebraic Geometry—one of the largest and most active groups in Germany.

The project centers on investigating tropical correspondence theorems for curve counts, utilizing toric degenerations of Fano varieties that arise from zero-mutable Laurent polynomials. While prior experience in these areas is beneficial, it is not required; an interest in combinatorial and computational methods is welcome. The position offers a three-year contract (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75%) and opportunities to participate in events and collaborations with the RTG 2965: From Geometry to Numbers and the Riemann Center for Geometry and Physics.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Mathematics and a strong background in Algebraic Geometry. Application materials include a CV, transcripts, summary and copy of Master thesis, a statement of background and motivation, and two reference letters. Applications can be submitted electronically via MathJobs.org or by postal mail. The application deadline is November 22, 2025, and the starting date is flexible between April and October 2026.
