Description
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Animal Science, focusing on the critical issue of crop emptying in chickens at slaughter. This research aims to address the sustainability challenges in poultry production by investigating why some chickens retain feed in their crops, leading to food waste and financial losses for farmers and slaughterhouses. The project is based at the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, a dynamic environment with approximately 125 staff members across Uppsala, Skara, Umeå, and Gothenburg.
As a PhD student, you will engage in both controlled trials at SLU’s experimental facility and field studies at chicken farms and slaughterhouses. The research will explore factors such as feed coarseness, meal feeding, and lighting conditions, and their effects on the crop and gizzard function in chickens. You will have the opportunity to influence the design of studies, especially in the latter stages of the project, and will be involved in planning, organizing, and conducting experiments, as well as compiling, statistically analyzing, and publishing results.
The position also includes presenting findings both scientifically and in layman's terms, and participating in teaching at basic and advanced levels. The department fosters a creative and inclusive work environment, encouraging networking with both industry and international contacts. SLU is committed to sustainable development, inclusivity, and gender equality, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in animal science, veterinary medicine, biology, or a related field. Strong English communication skills are essential, and knowledge of Swedish is advantageous. A B driving licence is required, and prior experience with poultry or Swedish animal production is beneficial. Applicants must submit a comprehensive application including CV, degree project, certificates, transcripts, references, and proof of English proficiency. Non-Swedish citizens should provide a copy of their passport’s information page.
The position is a 4-year employment contract with full funding and a competitive salary. The application deadline is January 15, 2026. For more details on doctoral studies and application procedures, visit the SLU website. Apply online via the provided application portal and become part of a leading institution dedicated to advancing sustainable animal husbandry and welfare.
