About this position

NORCE Norwegian Research Centre is offering a 3-year full-time PhD position in applied and computational mathematics, focusing on modeling and simulation of CO₂ storage. The successful candidate will join the Energy & Technology Department in Bergen and be affiliated with the Computational Geosciences and Modelling research group.

The position is part of the Norwegian Research Council funded gigaCCS centre, a major initiative dedicated to advancing large-scale carbon capture and subsurface storage, with nearly 40 partners from industry, research institutes, and academia. The gigaCCS centre aims to support Norway’s leadership in CCS and foster global implementation at the giga-tonne scale through targeted, interdisciplinary research and innovation. The PhD project will contribute to the centre’s mission area «Storage», specifically Work Package 3.1 on regional storage scale-up.

Research tasks include developing modeling and simulation capabilities for giga-scale CO₂ storage, focusing on regional-scale subsurface flow and geomechanics, and implementing numerical methods within open-source scientific computing frameworks. The developed methods will be tested on scenarios relevant to CO₂ storage formations in the Norwegian North Sea. Applicants must have a master’s degree (or equivalent) in applied and computational mathematics, scientific computing, computational physics, or computational geoscience. Master students may apply if they complete their final exam before January 2026.

Required qualifications include a background in fluid dynamics, numerical modeling, and scientific programming. Beneficial skills include experience with Python, C, C++, open-source software development, fluid flow, elasticity, transport in porous media, discrete element methods, and multiphase fluid flow. Candidates should be able to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-disciplinary team and must be highly proficient in English.

The position offers unique development opportunities, mentorship, and the chance to work in a strong professional environment with expertise in fluid flow and subsurface processes. Applications must be submitted electronically via the Jobbnorge portal, including a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, diplomas, and references.

The application deadline is December 1st, 2025. For questions, contact Senior HR Adviser Bente Heggdal Martinsen, Research Director Sarah E. Gasda, or Forsker II Trine Mykkeltvedt.
