About this position

The Institute for Social Law at KU Leuven invites applications for a full-time PhD position in comparative social security law. The Institute is renowned for its research and education in the broad field of social security law, combining both fundamental and policy-relevant legal studies. The doctoral research will focus on national social security law, particularly its relationship with national competition law and EU internal market rules. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong research proposal and subsequently prepare a doctoral thesis on this subject.

In addition to research, the position includes limited teaching responsibilities, such as supervising student papers and master's theses. KU Leuven offers a stimulating academic environment that values academic freedom, critical thinking, and personal development. The Institute is committed to high-quality legal education and research, with a strong emphasis on social relevance and interdisciplinary openness.

Applicants must have a master's degree in law or be in their final year with outstanding academic results (minimum level of distinction). Proficiency in English and Dutch is required, and knowledge of other languages (French, German, Italian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage. Experience abroad and prior teaching experience are assets. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in research, social security law, and its societal, practical, and policy dimensions. The Institute values accuracy, systematic work, and persistence.

The position is funded by a full-time scholarship for one year, renewable up to a maximum of four years.
