The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, is offering two PhD positions focused on the development of hierarchical X-ray imaging methods at synchrotron facilities. The research integrates computational imaging, X-ray nanoscience, and data science to pioneer new tomography techniques for multi-scale material and biological analysis. The projects are part of the ErUM-Data Project CmarT and aim to advance local adaptive tomography (LAT), a novel imaging approach that merges data across length scales to reveal hierarchical sample structures. PhD candidates will work within the X-Ray Nanoscience & X-Ray Optics Group and the Computational Imaging Group, collaborating closely with beamline scientists at PETRA III. Responsibilities include developing advanced physical models for holographic X-ray image formation, designing and implementing multi-scale reconstruction algorithms, analyzing hierarchical materials and biological samples, and publishing research results. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, with strong skills in tomography, imaging physics, or computational modeling, and proficiency in programming. The position offers a salary at 75% of the TVöD E13 pay grade, secure public-sector employment, and access to world-class facilities and training.
