About this position

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL) in San Sebastián, Spain, is offering a fully funded PhD position within the Infant Language and Cognition group, as part of the ERC-funded Bilingual LENS project. This research opportunity focuses on understanding the quantity, quality, and timing of early bilingual exposure that predict bilingual infants’ language outcomes. The project employs large-scale longitudinal studies, integrating neuroimaging (fNIRS), behavioral (eye tracking), and observational methods to assess dual language development in infants during their first two years.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Marina Kalashnikova, an Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor and Principal Investigator. The PhD project will specifically investigate the development of attentional abilities during language processing in young bilingual infants. The research will involve designing and implementing experimental studies, utilizing advanced neuroimaging and behavioral techniques, and contributing to cutting-edge work in bilingual language development and cognitive neuroscience.

Applicants must have completed at least 300 ECTS credits across their bachelor’s and master’s studies, with experience in neurophysiological or neuroimaging methods and strong English communication skills. Desirable qualifications include an interest in developmental neuroscience, language acquisition, bilingualism, and skills in programming and statistical analysis. The position offers a gross annual salary of €21,000, a four-year contract, and access to BCBL’s BabyLab and other state-of-the-art facilities. Additional benefits include a personal career development plan, training opportunities, and a supportive, inclusive research environment.

To apply, candidates should submit their application through the BCBL job portal, including a CV, research statement, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation by April 20, 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Marina Kalashnikova or the BCBL HR team. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science to advance their research careers in a leading international center.
