About this position
The Chair of Mobility and Digital Innovation Management at the University of Zurich, led by Professor Dr. Anja Schulze, invites applications for a PhD position in Innovation Management. The chair is part of the Strategy, Organization and Innovation area at the Institute of Business Administration, focusing on organizational strategies, processes, and structures that enable technology-based and sustainable innovation in firms. Research at the chair explores how organizations can achieve innovation performance effectively and resource-efficiently, and how technological and institutional conditions shape innovation outcomes.
Dissertation topics are developed collaboratively, allowing candidates to build on ongoing projects or pursue their own theoretical and empirical interests, provided there is a clear link to the chair’s research agenda. Many projects emphasize the mobility sector, including the automotive supplier industry, autonomous driving, and multimodal Mobility-as-a-Service solutions.
The position is ideal for highly motivated, research-oriented candidates seeking a rigorous, internationally oriented PhD at a leading research-intensive university in Europe. The PhD is pursued within the Graduate School of Business (GSB) and is anchored in the field of Strategy, Organization and Innovation. The position is designed for approximately four years, with a start date of March 1, 2026, or by mutual agreement.
Responsibilities include conducting research for a cumulative PhD thesis, collaborating on ongoing research projects (sometimes with corporate or public-sector partners), supporting teaching activities (such as supervising seminar papers and preparing course materials), and contributing to administrative and organizational tasks. The primary focus remains on research for the dissertation.
Applicants should have an excellent academic record with a Master’s degree (at least magna cum laude or equivalent) in Business Administration or a related field (Economics, Psychology, Sociology). A strong interest in innovation management research and topics such as platform economy, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and mobility transformation is essential. Experience in empirical research (qualitative or quantitative methods), independent and structured work style, strong team spirit, and excellent written and spoken English are required; knowledge of German is an asset.
The University of Zurich offers a stimulating research environment with international visibility, close academic supervision, integration into international research networks, and funding for participation in international conferences and PhD courses. Flexible working conditions and an attractive location in Zurich, one of the world’s most liveable cities, further enhance the opportunity. The annual gross salary is approximately CHF 58,000 (EUR 62,000).
