About this position
TUD Dresden University of Technology, recognized as a University of Excellence, is one of Germany's leading research institutions with a global orientation and a strong regional presence. The university is committed to addressing the grand challenges of the 21st century through innovative research and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Cluster of Excellence “Responsible Electronics in the Climate Change Era (REC²)” is at the forefront of developing sustainable solutions for the future of electronics, focusing on reducing resource and energy consumption and minimizing electronic waste.
This PhD position is offered within the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Institute of Solid State Electronics, Chair of Coating Technologies in Electronics. The successful candidate will join the REC² Cluster to work on the development of magnetron sputter epitaxy (MSE), a cutting-edge and sustainable technology for producing group III-nitride semiconductors. The research will emphasize strain management, buffer structure development, and AlGaN growth for AlGaN/GaN heterostructures, which are crucial for advanced power electronics and related applications.
The project encourages collaboration with a diverse team of scientists from REC², including experts in sustainability and social sciences, fostering an interdisciplinary approach. The position is full-time, starting March 1, 2026, and is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (WissZeitVG), and the role offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD qualification.
Applicants should hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline. Ideal candidates will have experience in magnetron sputtering, thin film growth, epitaxy, power electronics, III-nitride semiconductor materials/devices, and material characterization. Basic knowledge of plasma physics, thin-film technology, and semiconductor physics is advantageous. Fluency in English (written and oral) is required, and candidates should demonstrate an independent, solution-driven work attitude and a keen interest in both fundamental and applied research.
The REC² Cluster provides a supportive environment for aspiring researchers, including access to state-of-the-art facilities, the possibility to apply for GreenRiskFunds for high-risk/high-gain research, opportunities for international exchange, and structured supervision through a Thesis Advisory Committee and mentoring board. TUD Dresden promotes gender equality, diversity, and a family-friendly work environment, and encourages applications from women and candidates with disabilities.
To apply, submit your motivation letter, CV, degree certificate, transcript of grades, and proof of English language skills by January 6, 2026. Applications should be sent as a single PDF via the TUD SecureMail Portal or by email to [email protected]. For further details on data protection, visit the university's career website.
