About this position

This PhD position is offered by the Group of Materials for Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. The successful candidate will join the project 'Enhanced in-situ online/offline Mössbauer capabilities at ISOLDE (CERN) by fast in-situ laser processing for better measurement yields – eMILY,' funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The project duration is three years, starting on 01.01.2026, with a possible extension. The research focuses on innovative, integrated, and interdisciplinary approaches at the intersection of solid-state and applied physics, physical chemistry, and materials science. The main goal is to develop setups for defect analysis and engineering at the atomic scale, enabling defect engineering of semiconductor and insulator compounds. Responsibilities include developing and installing an on-line Mössbauer modular chamber for ISOLDE/CERN, simulating ion and laser beams, programming and automating test setups, enhancing evaluation software, performing measurements at ISOLDE/CERN and other locations, participating in joint ISOLDE collaboration projects, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting results in scientific publications, lectures, reports, and conferences. Applicants must have a university degree (Diploma/M.Sc.) in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field with above-average grades, and a strong understanding of solid-state physics and thermodynamics. Experience with semiconductor and insulator materials, Mössbauer methodology, in-situ experiments, nuclear spectroscopy, system setup, electronics, vacuum systems, cryogenics, or high-power lasers is highly desirable. Programming skills in Python, C++, or similar languages for data analysis and instrument control, as well as experience with data visualization and statistical analysis tools, are expected. Fluency in English and strong communication skills are required, along with a willingness to participate in international collaboration. The university offers attractive remuneration according to the TV-L collective agreement, special annual payment, 30 days vacation per year, additional days off on 24/31 December, a VBL pension scheme, family-friendly flexible working time, individual training opportunities, and extensive health and sports programs. Good knowledge of at least one object-oriented programming language (e.g., Python, C++) for data analysis and preferably instrument control languages (e.g., LabView, Simatic STEP) is expected. Experience with data visualization and statistical analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Origin, Python libraries) is advantageous.
