Ghent University, in partnership with the Horizon Europe Marie Curie Doctoral Network SUPER (Sustainable Sports and Physical Activity for Equity and Resilience), invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on physical activity promotion and climate action in aging and warming cities. This unique opportunity is part of a pioneering network offering 17 fellowships at the intersection of sustainability, sports science, and public health.

The successful candidate will be registered as a fee-free PhD student at Ghent University and enrolled in the SUPER Doctoral Network, with opportunities for secondments in industry and other European academic institutions. The research project aims to radically rethink how physical activity is promoted and practiced to address climate change, particularly for older adults in urban environments experiencing increased heat.

Key research objectives include conducting an AI-supported literature review on physical activity promotion for older adults in the context of climate change and urban heat, examining the effects of physical activity under varying weather and climate conditions on health outcomes, and evaluating the impact of heat on perceptions of light and moderate physical activity in older adults through lab-based studies. The doctoral candidate will be expected to publish scientific articles, present findings at national and international conferences, contribute to the broader SUPER project, and participate in educational activities within the consortium.

Applicants must hold or be finalising a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as movement sciences, health sciences, physical activity, rehabilitation sciences, physiology, health promotion, or public health. Essential requirements include excellent English language proficiency and Dutch language proficiency at minimum B1 level. Candidates must be available full-time to start in September 2026 and meet MSCA eligibility conditions, including not already holding a doctoral degree and not having resided or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment. Desirable qualities include scientific curiosity, strong communication skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, motivation, reliability, innovation-driven attitude, and enthusiasm for working with older adults and planetary health.

The position offers a four-year appointment as a full-time PhD Fellow at Ghent University (1+3 years; first three years on the project, final year funded by Ghent University). The MSCA programme provides competitive and attractive working conditions, including a monthly living allowance (€4010, subject to country correction coefficient), mobility allowance (€710), and family allowance (€660, if applicable). Tuition fees are fully covered, and all amounts are subject to tax and contributions.
