The University of Antwerp’s Department of Computer Science, in collaboration with imec and the IDLab research group, is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for a fully funded graduate teaching and research assistant position. The successful applicant will join a dynamic team working on the next generation of resilient wireless networks, with a particular focus on strengthening the resilience of future 6G radio access networks (RANs) against power grid failures and adverse conditions such as natural disasters or deliberate attacks.

The research will involve performance modelling and optimization of 6G RANs, exploring dynamic reconfiguration and adaptive resource management strategies to ensure graceful network degradation and self-healing capabilities. The work will include analytical modelling, simulations, and real-world experimentation using IDLab’s unique research infrastructure, which features a city-wide wireless network testbed, an indoor SDR testbed for next-generation wireless communications and sensing, and a GPU Lab for advanced machine learning model training.

As a graduate teaching and research assistant, you will spend at least 50% of your time preparing and defending a PhD thesis in the field of resilient wireless networks. The remaining time will be dedicated to supporting and teaching academic classes in the Bachelor of Computer Science, developing teaching materials, evaluating exercises and exams, and supervising students and their Master dissertations. You will also participate in academic and societal service activities within the department, including student recruitment and alumni engagement.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in computer science, (applied) mathematics, or a related field by the start date, and demonstrate excellent academic results. The position requires strong research and teaching competences, motivation for professional development, and a commitment to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation. The appointment is for an initial period of two years, renewable up to a maximum of six years following positive evaluations. The gross monthly salary is based on the Academic Assistant Staff (AAP) pay scale, with additional benefits such as ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and commuting support.

The planned start date is 1 April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The main work locations are The Beacon (research) and Campus Middelheim (teaching) in Antwerp, Belgium.
