About this position

The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Robotics, Automation and Sensing, focusing on food processing automation. The position is based at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Technology Management within the Faculty of Science and Technology, and is part of the Robotics Group, which works on both agricultural robotics and manufacturing automation. This PhD will concentrate on industrial robots handling food products, a challenging area due to the variability and perishable nature of raw materials.

The research scope includes several key areas: (1) Augmented 3D training sets using generative AI to address the lack of standardized models and high variation in food products; (2) Multimodal sensing to improve process accuracy and repeatability by integrating vision systems and other sensors; (3) Collaborative operation, enabling robots to work alongside humans and adapt to irregular batch production environments. The position is not tied to a specific R&D project, allowing the candidate to define their research topic within these areas and contribute to future projects.

Main tasks involve topic definition, developing use-cases for benchmarking, hardware/software development, data collection, experimental documentation, and scientific publication. The candidate will also complete required courses and participate in the academic community at NMBU.

Applicants must have a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, with a minimum grade of B in both coursework and thesis. Candidates submitting their MSc thesis by 30 June 2026 may be considered. Required skills include proficiency in English, relevant programming experience, and demonstrable expertise in at least one key area (generative AI, sensor systems, collaborative robotics). Preferred qualifications include experience with 3D vision systems, programming languages (Python, C#, C, C++), industrial robots, and academic writing.

The position offers a salary of 550,800 NOK per year, with the possibility of a higher salary for exceptionally qualified candidates. Admission to the PhD program is a prerequisite for appointment. The candidate is expected to be physically present at NMBU in Ås, Norway, daily. Employment follows Norwegian university regulations and relevant acts.

To apply, submit your application via the Jobbnorge portal, including a motivation letter, CV, certified academic documents, English translations if necessary, diploma supplement, documentation of English proficiency, and any additional relevant documentation. The application deadline is 4 May 2026. For further information, contact Professor Alex Mason at [email protected].

NMBU is committed to diversity and encourages qualified candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The Faculty of Science and Technology offers a vibrant research environment with approximately 150 employees, 70 PhD students, and 1,500 students, covering disciplines such as data science, mechanics, robotics, environmental engineering, and more. The university is located in Ås, 30 km from Oslo.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
