About this position
PhD opportunity in Smart Materials and Organic Chemistry at the University of Waterloo. The project focuses on the synthesis of novel liquid crystalline materials and sits at the intersection of smart materials, liquid crystals, soft robotics, and organic chemistry. The successful candidate will join a research environment connected to chemical engineering and materials-focused work at the University of Waterloo.
Research focus: complex multi-step organic synthesis, sequence design, advanced purification, air- and moisture-sensitive chemistry, and structural characterization of complex molecules. Relevant techniques include automated flash chromatography, recrystallization, Schlenk-line and cannula-transfer methods, vacuum manifolds, and analysis by 1H/13C/19F NMR, HRMS, FT-IR, and HPLC.
Eligibility: applicants should hold a Master's degree or a 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field. The post prefers candidates with independent, hands-on research experience in a synthesis-intensive environment, strong practical skills in anhydrous/anaerobic work, and good scientific communication and teamwork.
Funding: the position is funded through University of Waterloo Graduate Research Studentship (GRS) guidelines.
How to apply: submit the application through the dedicated webform. Prepare a cover letter, detailed CV, contact details for at least three references, and academic transcripts.
