PhD Position in Soil Biodiversity, Molecular Ecology, and Imaging – Switzerland Agroscope in Switzerland

Agroscope, the Swiss federal centre of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector, is offering a PhD position focused on "The hidden soil biodiversity in top- and subsoils of canton Graubünden (Switzerland)." This project aims to explore soil biodiversity using advanced molecular methods and 3-D imaging technologies. The research will involve soil sampling at various locations in Graubünden, molecular laboratory work (including DNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing), X-ray tomography of soil cores, and bioinformatic, 3-D image, and statistical data analysis and visualization. The successful candidate will also present their work at national and international events and contribute to scientific publications.

The main objective of the dissertation is to survey the biodiversity of microorganisms and mesofauna across all soil layers at various locations in the canton of Graubünden using molecular and imaging technologies. At selected locations, molecular methods and X-ray tomography will be used to investigate the influence of soil structure on various organisms. This research is a significant step toward better understanding the soil ecosystem and preserving soil biodiversity in Switzerland.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in biology, environmental sciences, agronomy, or a related field, with knowledge of biodiversity, ecology, soil science, and soil ecosystems. Experience with molecular laboratory work is required, and knowledge of a data processing language (such as R or Python) and basic statistical skills are expected. Additional skills in image processing (e.g., microscopy, aerial photography) and a driver's license are advantageous. Candidates should be independent, structured, solution-oriented, enjoy teamwork, and possess knowledge of two official Swiss languages and English.

The position is full-time (100%) and temporary, starting on 01.04.2026 or as agreed, and runs until 28.02.2030. The salary class is not specified.
