About this position

The MSCA Doctoral Network LipidBRIGHT offers a fully funded PhD position at INSERM 1116 in Nancy, France, under the supervision of Professor Magnus Bäck. This interdisciplinary project focuses on the mechanisms underlying the resolution of chronic lipid-driven vascular inflammation, a key factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD), chronic kidney disease, cancer, and chronic inflammatory disease. LipidBRIGHT unites scientists, clinicians, industry partners, and stakeholders across Europe to accelerate innovations in disease prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy by integrating expertise in lipids from clinical, biomedical, technological, and data science fields.

The PhD student will investigate functional, molecular, and immune-metabolic targets using in vivo and in vitro approaches, aiming to diagnose, prevent, and treat the transition from health to CVD by promoting effective inflammation resolution. The research will leverage advanced technologies, established patient cohorts, and collaborations within the LipidBRIGHT network. Training will cover lipid biochemistry, pathophysiology, clinical application, and complementary skills in personal and career development, as well as business training. Exposure to both academic and non-academic environments is provided, supporting the translation of research findings into innovative products and services.

Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Physiology, Life Sciences, Medical/Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field, with a strong background in molecular biology and histology. Experience in biochemistry, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, proteomics, and metabolomics is highly advantageous. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is appreciated. Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational skills, dedication, proactiveness, and willingness to participate in networking activities. Prior experience in cardiology research and animal experimentation qualification are highly advantageous. Eligibility criteria include not having a doctoral degree and compliance with the MSCA mobility rule (not having resided or carried out main activity in France for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment).

The doctoral candidate will receive a 36-month scholarship covering living expenses, adjusted for the cost of living in France and candidate’s family situation according to MSCA rules. All training activities, travel, and accommodation for annual meetings and network events are fully covered. Research consumables and project costs are funded by the host institutions. The position is supported by the Horizon Europe MSCA-DN grant, ensuring access to dedicated workspace and research facilities.

To apply, send a CV, cover letter, MSc transcript, one letter of reference, and contact details of your academic supervisor/referee to [email protected] and [email protected] before 30 April 2026 at 17:00 CET. For further information, visit the project and institute websites provided in the position description.
