Description
The University of Twente invites applications for a four-year, fully funded PhD position focused on the social dynamics of energy communities in the Dutch energy transition. This research opportunity is embedded within the SYNERGY project, a multi-institutional initiative under the National Science Agenda (NWA) call Social Dynamics in the Energy Transition, involving leading Dutch universities and research organizations. The project aims to understand how social dynamics—such as contestation, resistance, and cooperation—affect the collective action and governance of energy communities, which are pivotal to the national energy transition but often face challenges in scaling due to complex social and political factors.
The PhD research will adopt a qualitative, exploratory approach, utilizing longitudinal case studies and participatory action research (PAR) across diverse energy community projects. These include smart grid experimentation and energy sharing in rural regions, as well as the development of an energy community in Amsterdam Southeast. The research will integrate simulations, participatory methods, and co-creation with stakeholders to generate actionable knowledge, tools, and interventions that promote energy justice and inform inclusive policymaking.
As a PhD candidate, you will be based in the Section of Governance and Technology for Sustainability (CSTM) at the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS), University of Twente, and benefit from collaborative supervision with Delft University of Technology. The BMS faculty is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, combining social sciences and technology to address complex societal challenges. You will join a vibrant academic community dedicated to advancing sustainable development, resilience, and social inclusiveness through research and education.
The position offers a stimulating scientific environment, a comprehensive training program through the Twente Graduate School, and excellent employment conditions. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3059 in the first year to €3881 in the fourth year, with generous leave hours, free access to campus sports facilities, and family-friendly policies including paid parental leave.
Eligibility requirements include a master’s degree in social sciences or a multidisciplinary program (such as sociology, human geography, social psychology, communication sciences, public administration, CoSEM, innovation studies, or STS), affinity with multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary research, and interest in energy technology (especially smart grids). Candidates must be proactive in social work environments, skilled in participatory workshops, and comfortable bridging academia and practice. Strong command of Dutch and English (C1 level) in both speaking and writing is essential. The position also involves minor teaching activities and supervision of graduation students.
To apply, submit your application via the University of Twente careers portal by January 12, 2026. Required documents include a cover letter, CV with courses and grades, a writing sample on social dynamics in energy transition, and contact information for two scientific references. For further information about the position, you may contact Professor Thomas Hoppe at [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity for motivated graduates passionate about the intersection of social sciences, energy technology, and sustainability to contribute to impactful research and policy development in the Dutch energy transition.
