The Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Germany, offers an international and interdisciplinary PhD programme in International Development Studies (IDS). This three-year, full-time programme is designed for excellent young academics from around the world who are passionate about advancing their careers in international development and engaging in cross-disciplinary research. The programme is taught entirely in English and begins each November, with applications due by 31 March for the following winter semester.

The PhD IDS is embedded within the RUB Research School, a recipient of the German Excellence Initiative, and is offered in cooperation with the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Sciences, and Economics. Each admitted candidate is assigned a supervisor holding a professorial post in one of the participating faculties. The curriculum features a blend of individual research projects and tailor-made seminars covering topics such as development economics, political institutions, conflict and democracy, and economics and culture. Students benefit from a structured research environment, including a field research phase typically in the fourth semester, and access to courses on generic skills such as scientific writing, presentation, and professional communication. The programme also offers international elements, including joint PhD opportunities with Erasmus University Rotterdam and cooperation with the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. Field research abroad is encouraged, particularly in the home countries of participants.

Funding opportunities are available, including two GSSP scholarships per intake, the Deutschlandstipendium grant (300 EUR/month for one year), and graduation grants for international students. While there are generally no tuition fees at RUB, students must pay a social contribution fee of approximately 330 EUR per semester, which includes a public transport ticket. Living costs in Bochum are estimated at a minimum of 950 EUR per month, with various accommodation options available both on and off campus.

Applicants must hold an above-average advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in human geography, law, social or political science, economics, development management, or related fields. Degree equivalence for international applicants is assessed during the application process. A research proposal (maximum five pages) is required, and guidelines are available on the institute's website. English language proficiency at CEFR level C1 (IELTS 7, TOEFL iBT 94, Duolingo 125 or above) must be demonstrated unless English has been the language of instruction since secondary education.
