Description

The University of Ulm, Germany, in partnership with the European Commission's MSCA Doctoral Network ENDOTRAIN, invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Data Integrity for Digital Health & Medical Wearables (DC9). This position is based at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of personalized medicine through advanced research in digital endocrinology.

As part of the ENDOTRAIN network, you will join Europe’s first doctoral program integrating AI, sensor technology, omics, and clinical medicine to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal diseases. The project focuses on developing robust, scalable infrastructure for integrating and synchronizing multimodal biomedical data, including hormone profiles and wearable biosensor streams (heart rate, actigraphy, temperature). Your mission will be to architect data integrity workflows for endocrine digital twins, ensuring high-quality data for clinical intelligence and research.

Key project aims include designing a state-of-the-art data platform, developing machine learning algorithms for artifact detection and data quality assurance, and supporting the next generation of computer platforms for endocrine disease management. You will benefit from access to high-performance computing facilities, unique datasets, and advanced wearable technologies, as well as extensive technical and physiological training and international collaboration opportunities.

The position includes mandatory secondments at the University of Rome (AI-based virtual twins for clinical decision support) and Leitwert AG (health middleware), providing practical exposure and networking within a global consortium. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary training, merging clinical endocrinology, AI, data science, engineering, ethics, and law.

Applicants should hold a first-class master's degree in Electrical, Biomedical, or Communications Engineering, Computer or Data Science, or a closely related discipline with strong mathematical and data management skills. Required qualifications include expertise in signal processing, machine learning, programming (Python, Matlab, or C), and a good understanding of biomedical signals and human physiology. Knowledge of embedded systems, cloud, and edge computing is advantageous. English proficiency is mandatory.

The scholarship is open to EU and non-EU candidates and covers tuition fees, training support, travel, secondments, and a stipend of 55,000 euros/year for three years. Applicants must not have resided or carried out a main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the past 36 months before the PhD start date and must not already hold a doctoral degree. Diversity and inclusion are core values of the program, with a gender equality plan and encouragement for applicants from immigrant backgrounds and those with disabilities.

To apply, submit your application via the Jobbnorge portal, including all mandatory attachments: Application form, CV, Mobility declaration, and Motivation Letter. Transcripts of diplomas in English must be uploaded. If your master's degree is pending, provide a statement from your institution confirming the expected award date. For further details, visit the ENDOTRAIN webpages or contact Prof. Walter Karlen for informal enquiries.
