About this position
This PhD scholarship at the Department of Preclinical Sciences and Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), offers an exciting opportunity to investigate melano-macrophages in salmon. The project, in collaboration with The Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh, aims to advance understanding of these immune cells, which play a crucial role in inflammation and are linked to quality deviations in farmed Atlantic salmon fillets. The research will build on previous studies and focus on characterizing melano-macrophages and their involvement in the development of melanized focal changes, a condition with significant economic impact in aquaculture.
The successful candidate will conduct experiments using cell lines and primary cell cultures, employing techniques such as cell sorting, single-cell transcriptomics, and cell-resolved RT-qPCR. The project also involves generating RNA probes and antibodies to assess inflammatory responses in fish. Collaboration with the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund (FHF) project 'FatSpot' will provide materials from wet-lab experiments and production fish, with the goal of elucidating the impact of dietary oils on melanized focal changes. Laboratory work may include a stay abroad at The Roslin Institute in Scotland, offering valuable international research experience.
The PhD student will join the 'Immunoanatomy in fishes' research group at NMBU's Unit of Anatomy, which currently includes one professor, one associate professor, and three PhD students. The group is recognized internationally for its work in fish immunology and maintains extensive collaborations. The position is for three years, with the possibility of extension for up to one year if teaching obligations are undertaken. The scholarship includes a competitive salary (NOK 550,800–660,000) and grant-funded travel abroad.
Applicants must meet NMBU's PhD programme admission requirements, including a relevant master's or veterinary degree, strong academic background, and proficiency in English. Experience in cell culture, single cell omics, RT-qPCR, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, electron microscopy, fluorescence/confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, aquaculture, fish health/diseases, teaching, and scientific publishing is advantageous. Proficiency in Norwegian is considered an asset, especially for teaching opportunities. Personal qualities sought include creativity, independence, motivation, flexibility, and strong communication and collaboration skills.
To apply, candidates must submit their application electronically via Jobbnorge, including CV, motivation letter, certified copies of diplomas and transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and other relevant documentation. Applications not submitted through Jobbnorge by the deadline (April 17, 2026) will not be considered. For further information, contact Associate Professor Håvard Bjørgen ([email protected]) or Professor Erling Olaf Koppang ([email protected]).
NMBU is Norway's leading institution for veterinary education and research, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and societal impact. The university offers a vibrant student environment and internationally recognized research groups. More information about NMBU and its requirements for applicants with foreign education can be found at www.nmbu.no/en.
