Description

[Fully-funded PhD scholarship for up to four years, corresponding to 100% of the net salary of an AAP staff member with the same family circumstances. The exact amount is determined by Ghent University’s HR Department, based on family status and seniority. Fellowships are exempt from personal income tax. Additional financial support for conference and workshop attendance. Staff benefits include training, 36 days annual leave, bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.] Ghent University is offering a fully-funded PhD scholarship in Environmental Humanities, tenable for up to four years and co-supervised by Professors Marco Caracciolo, Stef Craps, and Elly McCausland. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to propose their own research project, which should be firmly situated within the environmental humanities and combine theoretical exploration with textual analysis. The supervisory team’s expertise spans narrative theory and narratology (especially in ecological and environmental contexts), memory and affect studies (focusing on cultural narratives of crisis, loss, and transformation), children’s and young adult literature (with attention to risk, trust, imagination, and the environment), and ecocriticism with openness to decolonial, interdisciplinary, and cross-cultural perspectives. Projects that creatively integrate these domains are especially encouraged. Applicants should demonstrate a strong grounding in relevant theoretical debates and original analytical skills. The scholarship provides a full-time position starting on 1 February 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, initially for one year and renewable for three more years upon positive evaluation. The fellowship covers 100% of the net salary of an AAP staff member, with the exact amount determined by Ghent University’s HR Department according to family status and seniority. The fellowship is exempt from personal income tax and includes additional financial support for conference and workshop attendance. As a staff member, you will benefit from extensive training and professional development opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The project is funded by the university’s Special Research Fund (BOF), and you will complete the doctoral training programme offered by Ghent University’s Doctoral School. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (English Literature, Literary Studies, or Comparative Literature), with candidates near completion also eligible. A strong academic record, research experience, and excellent English writing and speaking skills are required. Applications should include a cover letter, research proposal, CV, transcripts, writing sample, and contact details of two referees, submitted as a single PDF in English to the three supervisors by 15 November 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in innovative, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of literature and environmental studies.
